Saman Shahi
Music
Saman finished his Masters of Music in Composition from the University of Toronto in 2012, where he also received his Bachelor’s degree with honors in Composition and Piano Performance in 2010. His instructors include Gary Kulesha, Sasha Rapoport, Norbert Palej and Roger Bergs, and for shorter periods Heather Schmidt, Ray Murray Schaffer, Goerge Tsontakis and Christos Hatzis.
Saman is a professional member of the Canadian League of Composers as well as SOCAN foundation.
His music has been read and performed by many ensembles and renowned performers across Canada and the United States as well as France and Germany. His Music has also been broadcast on BBC Persian and the CBC (Podcast), as well as Radio Sedaye Toronto in 2013.
Saman is one of the co-founders of ICOT [Iranian Composers of Toronto] (http:// www.icot.ca). He also recently served as the composer in residence for the North Dale Concert Band, where he composed and conducted a piece for a large wind ensemble in the fall of 2012. He was also one of the composers of the sensational “Rob Ford: an Operatic Life” which was premiered last January 2012 in the Macmillan Theatre.
He is the recipient of many awards including the 2012 CLC/CMC mentorship project in Ontario, as well as the Minister of Culture and Sports' letter of acknowledgements for his artistic and cultural activities in 2012.
Saman is also active as a pianist, conductor and educator.
