Sayeh Irankhah
Visual Arts
Sayeh Irankhah was born in Tabriz, Iran in 1977, and currently resides in Toronto. She received a diploma from the Mirak Fina Art School in painting and later a degree in Painting and Drawing from the Tabriz Women's College. Her paintings have been exhibited in numerous shows in Iran and Canada, including Behzad Gallery, Yasami Gallery, Soltan Mohammad Festival, Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition, Queen Gallery and The Artist Project.
Irankhah won First Prize in Painting at the National Inter-Collage exposition and competition. Her recent works from the "Still Life" series were the subject of an article by R.M. Vaughan for The Globe and Mail, where he writes: "Sayeh Irankhah's acrylics on canvas are heavily textured, almost 3D, and unapologetically decorative. Her still-lifes of bowls, serving vessels and food are augmented with swirling Arabic text, paisleys and floral patterns, each highlighted with specks of gold trim and gorgeous dollops of turquoise. […] Under the text, which covers 80 per cent of the surface, sits a thick layer of terracotta red paint that supports a parade of five dopey, fat birds: two peacocks, a stork or heron and two ducks. This painting is pure joy."
